Jill H. Lawrence reviews a new book
by Chalmers Brothers

Language and the Pursuit of Happiness

Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres and Larry King all agree: The Secret is well worth discovering! All three media moguls have devoted entire television shows to the Law of Attraction, or like attracts like, which is the basic premise of both the movie and the book The Secret.

As The Secret is sweeping the country, the book is riding high on both the USA Today and The New York Times bestseller lists. So what is this all about? One of The Secret’s central tenets is: thoughts become things. As The Secret “stars” and Oprah guests Michael Beckwith and James Ray explain, like does indeed attract like. They point out that quantum physics proves that all of life is an energy experience; human beings and all of the objects that surround us are in a perpetual state of vibration. We human beings along with everything around us, according to quantum physicists, are literally a mass of whirling molecules.

What does that mean? It means that we are like radio towers emitting signals. And we, like a radio receiver, get back what we are broadcasting. Our frequency always matches what we receive. If we’re tuned to 98.8, we cannot possibly hear what is being broadcast on 101.1 – the frequencies don’t match.

As The Secret reveals in its pages, “Thoughts are magnetic and thoughts have a frequency. As you think, those thoughts are sent out into the Universe where they magnetically attract all things that are on the same frequency. Everything sent out returns to the source. And that source is You.”

The Secret emphasizes this as does Chalmers Brothers in his book Language and the Pursuit of Happiness. Brothers delves deeply into language to show how our words, both spoken and unspoken, create our future – one of the central tenets of The Secret.

Brothers has counseled thousands about the power of both spoken and unspoken words. As a certified executive and personal coach, veteran leadership consultant and national seminar leader, Brothers is extremely aware of the power of language and how it creates the circumstances in our lives. He is dedicated to revealing The Secret of words.

As The Secret says, “Your Life right now is a reflection of your past thoughts,” with which Brothers agrees. For this reason, he has written an entire book that explains how to harness thoughts and shift words, both spoken and unspoken, so they create positive outcomes. In fact, since 1995, everything Brothers has done career-wise comes from a foundation of language. “We literally bring things into being through language whether we’re aware of that or not,” Brothers points out. “I support people in being conscious of how they speak and think.”

One of the central points that Brothers explains to his clients and nationwide audiences is the value of becoming a conscious observer of yourself and the words you think and speak. “Our internal and external conversations define us,” Brothers emphasizes. “They set our limits and establish possibilities as well as directly impact our effectiveness, relationships and emotional well-being.”

Brothers likes to quote Henry Ford: “If you think you can, or think you can’t, you’re right.” The Secret and Brothers are both reminding the world of what Ford knew way back when. But the Truth with a capital T goes back to antiquity. Buddha (563 BC-483 BC) succinctly summed it up when he said, “All that we are is a result of what we have thought.” Think about it.
